I’m trying to set up my first data merge and I continue to get the same error. As soon as I pull my excel doc and indd doc, a red message comes up, “MyDataMerge could not add a folder to the workfolder. Please save your work and restart, this sometimes can solve permission issues.” I did set up the automation in my privacy settings for MDM to allow excel and indd. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thank you!!

First make sure that you have the most recent version which is 2.1.11 (there is a known bug in previous version)
Can you confirm that?
If yes, MyDataMerge asked you to select a workfolder. Is this folder located in some special location e.g. on a network drive or icloud?Additionally which version of macOS are you using?

2024-03-28 at 9:55 pm #19776Sarah ShearerCustomerHi Pat!
I am using the latest version of MDM. I wasn’t sure where the workfolder should go so I just selected my hard drive folder. For my OS, I’m on Sonoma, but I plan to update tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully this helps!
2024-03-28 at 10:19 pm #19777PatStaffThe harddrive itself is especially protected by macOS. To add files there even you have to enter your password :)
So a solution would be to select another folder.First we need to remove the currently selected folder (harddrive).
This currently only works via console – we will add a function in the preferences within one of the next updates.
- Close MyDataMerge
- Open the “Terminal” application (press space + cmd and enter “Terminal”). Once opened, copy and execute this command (in Sonoma there might pop a message up that Terminal wants to access data from other apps – allow it as it needs to access data from MyDataMerge):
defaults delete com.toolboxcode.mydatamerge mdm_workfolder
- Go to your documents folder (inside your user folder)
- Create a folder “MyDataMerge”
- Start MyDataMerge again, the workfolder selection should re-appear
- Select the newly created MyDataMerge Folder within your documents folder.
This should solve your issues.
I forwarded this to our developers so they can implement a check directly when a folder is selected (to check for write access).

2024-03-29 at 5:19 pm #19779Sarah ShearerCustomerPat! You’re amazing, thank you so much! Now I have a new problem… when I pull my indd and excel docs into MDM this comes up:
- Found fonts that are loaded from Adobe Cloud at runtime. Please ensure that all used fonts are loaded/installed in the system or are already activated before opening the document.
I have my preferences set so that Adobe fonts are deactivated so there aren’t any in use in the document.
- Found additional missing fonts (not from Adobe Cloud):
- Open Sans BoldBold
- Open Sans RegularRegular
I’m not missing any fonts within my document. I went in a replaced these two with the same fonts just to see if that would work, but it didn’t. I’m not sure what to do as the document is saying that there are no issues. Any help would be appreciated!!
2024-03-29 at 7:05 pm #19780PatStaffHey sarah,
Please first check the following. Is there a fonts folder next to the layout file? (Like usual when someone sends you a packaged indesign project).
If so – move it somewhere else and open your layout in indesign. Does it open without requesting fonts? If not: even if setting in preferences, InDesign asks you on opening the file if you want to load cloud based fonts. Once you click yes preferences are overwritten.
Secondly check if the fonts are really installed on your machine. Check fontbook or if you have any other font management software check that. You may cut off internet while indesign is open and open your document then. Dors it load the font?
The reason why this is necessary is that during the merge process MyDataMerge opens documents very fast and InDesign does not offer an API to check for cloud loaded fonts. So we need to make sure that text is with the right font immediately after opening it (without any delay for downloading from cloud- which would also slow down the whole process)

2024-03-29 at 7:46 pm #19781Sarah ShearerCustomerI moved the font folder out of the package and opened the indd doc and it didn’t say that any fonts were missing. I did try this with one of the other files I have to do this data merge with and that one also worked fine without the font folder. And just to be sure I did try turning off the internet, as well, and the doc was still fine. Thank you!
2024-03-29 at 7:56 pm #19782PatStaffCan you try it in MyDataMerge then? Same configuration (font folder removed)
Does it work then?Official MyDataMerge Team
2024-03-29 at 8:26 pm #19783Sarah ShearerCustomerIt doesn’t, no. I removed the folder and resaved the document, still gives the same error message.
2024-03-29 at 8:52 pm #19784PatStaffDo you have any illustrator file placed in the layout included that might contain the mentioned fonts?

2024-03-29 at 9:29 pm #19785Sarah ShearerCustomerThere is an eps in the file, but it doesn’t include any of the fonts that are showing up as missing. I opened it in illustrator and outlined it just to be sure and tried again, same error came up. What’s especially weird is that I can’t even find open sans in the document, period. For your knowledge, I didn’t set up any of these documents, the came from a different company. I’m just in charge of the data merge part and there are ten of them total with over 200 versions needed.

2024-03-29 at 10:02 pm #19787Sarah ShearerCustomerBecause of the nature of this client, I’m not sure that I would be allowed to send you anything. I’m going to check with the internal team and find that out. If I can, I’ll send them to you early next week. Thank you so much for your help and I hope you have an awesome weekend!
