Hi,
I just finalizing my first directory book in InDesign. The last thing I will do is to import my listings into it. I have tried with Script 30 different and then finally I tried the Data merge. For 100 rows it took 5 hours and in the end, stopped at 96%.
I have 8000 rows, and 14 columns of data.
Title
Description Max 300 characters
Second description max 200 characters
Category: 4 words
Features: 4 words
Website link
Social media links: Instagram, X, Tiktok, Youtube, Facebook, Linkedin
Price point from and to.How long would it probably take to import these into the Indesign with your solution?
And is this doable? and what are the costs to complete it?
Kind regards,
Viktor

Is your listing a
1. Predefined layout? Means you have a “block” for one listing item which repeats e.g. 4 times per page and then the next page comes
2. One listing per page?
3. An ongoing text in ONE SINGLE textframe?
A screenshot of a single item empty, and how a page should look like once filled would be helpful to give you better information

I have prepared in InDesign a listing layout with placeholders. 4 listings per page in A5 format. I have grouped every listing and then duplicated it so I have 4 on every page. Then, copy the pages so that I have them for everyone.
I also have 6 icons following Website, Social media, and price point.
One of the issues I have today is to name the placeholder listing 1, 2, 3,4,5,6,7, and so on. and any script I try to make it happen is not working. Every placeholder stands alone in the document. I have prepared the textboxes to handle the number of characters in every needed textbox.
The Excel sheet is prepared and ready to go. I have social media link cells that can vary from row to row if it contains data.
I can send screen shot if you have an email address I can send to?
Thanks for your fast assistant in this.
Kind regards
Viktor

As from what I can see in the images, this is not an issue at all with MyDataMerge.
Note: one single record should not be made up as table, more likely a combination of textframes (cannot see the structure clearly in the images)
Things MyDataMerge can do where InDesign lacks:
- Add ongoing numbers to each item (even with leading zeros)
- Remove lines including the icon when no social entry exists
- Take care of the document load (8000 records and 4 per page means 2000 pages) by creating book files and link InDesign documents automatically. This increases speed dramatically. Still it will take time, but it’s definitely doable (we have clients handling 100k records)
If you’d become a customer i’d be happy to help you set this up (next week though)
