I am trying to load a different object style to my image if the logo has a yes condition. The issue is when I apply the chain all of my MR record options are greyed out. As soon as I take out the chain process it opens up again. Am I missing something?
2020-03-13 at 2:07 pm #12616PatStaffHi briggs and welcome to the support forum,
let me wrap this up for my better understanding:
- You have a layout with multiple records per page enabled
- You have a placeholder configured as “Replace with image”. This placeholder does have a setup for applying an object style
- You want to add an additional setup with the process chain and conditions to apply a different object style if a specific condition triggers it.
Correct so far?

2020-03-13 at 2:15 pm #12617PatStaffIf the above describe situation applies, we can confirm this should work. The reason if it doesn’t work for you must be in another setting.
May you go to
- Menu > File > Package
And package your project for us including layout and datasource?
After doing so you may open the datasource in the package folder and remove all records except the first line (data titles) – for privacy reasons. We hereby confirm to use submitted data only for debugging and support and delete them immidiately afterwards.
You may send the project to support@toolboxcode.comOfficial MyDataMerge Team
2020-03-13 at 2:34 pm #12619briggsCustomerI have sent you a package, thanks for the support!
2020-03-13 at 3:24 pm #12621briggsCustomerI changed my setup to a predefined layout and it seems to function correctly, but I would really prefer to use the generate layout option.
I noticed on a hover over generate layout option it says…Using style options is not supported for generate layout? Is this still the case, is there a workaround?

2020-03-13 at 4:39 pm #12623PatStaffHi Briggs,
we investigated your issue and can tell you it’s easy to solve.
While InDesign itself only can repeat records on one page, MyDataMerge also accepts an already provided layout for multiple records. And this is what you need to use for this feature. Do the following:
- Open your layout
- Copy the text frame on the page as often as you need it and position the copies exactly where you want them to be. So instead of one textframe you have as many as you need on that page (e.g. 8). Its important that the copies need to be exactly identical to each other – so if you change stuff later on make sure this still applies (well there is an expert option to bypass that but for the beginning try it like that). Find a tutorial here.
- Then update the layout in MyDataMerge
- In the export section > multiple records the option “MD per page (Layout provided)” will be unlocked. Choose this one.
- With this setting you can now use multiple different setups with conditions and styling
Please give us a feedback if it worked out for you this way.

2020-03-13 at 4:42 pm #12624PatStaffJust to let you know – with this feature you’re not limited to one page layouts (like in InDesign), you can create front sides and mirrored backsides for example. Find an example video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d1gSsDWTNw

Above from a previous post I made in this string. Yes this works fine but it would be great to use a generate layout feature with chained process’
2020-03-13 at 4:59 pm #12626PatStaffHi briggs,
this doesn’t work with generate layout as this is a process indesign controls completely itself and doesn’t let us change anything at all (e.g. style).
Is there a specific reason why you want to use generate layout? Cause you can also keep it flexible with provided layout.Official MyDataMerge Team
2020-03-13 at 5:38 pm #12627briggsCustomerI would like to be able to just have lines of data pump out little modules with out having to pre-lay them out. Its a shame that adding a chained item action breaks this ability. With that being said I understand the limitations of InDesign.
Honestly I love this application you guys are doing a great job!
If I could add one bit of advise from a UI perspective, having a visual of the different MR options would help the end user get there head around the available options. I know that the support text and videos are great that you have produced but it would be nice to a have a visual in the users interface.
Keep up the great work, I will be purchasing this at the current company I work for!
Thanks again,
Steve

This is a brilliant idea. Even if MyDataMerge becomes more complex with major updates by supporting more features our goal #1 is still to keep it simple to use.
Team decided to implement this so i’ve put it on the roadmap here.

We totally understand this. Still it’s currently the best way to handle multiple record per page as InDesigns MR per page feature …
- supports 1 page only
- is buggy (you’ll find tons of posts in the Adobe forum)
