I have just spent several hours testing the software and creating several files. On the strength of my testing I decided to purchase the software. Now the fully registered copy will not open any of the test files I so painstakingly created – it gives an error code 404200. HELP please – I feel like I have wasted half a day and AUD $230.

And welcome aboard!
Please try to quit InDesign completely and restart it – this error code shows that InDesign throws an error when trying to open the InDesign layout.Let me know if it worked for you

Can you give any suggestions for speeding up the output? The main reason I acquired the software was to allow Text Styles, Paragraph Styles and Object Styles to be applied.I read that this means that Indesign has to process every record and it slows down considerably. Most of the files I need to process contain well over 1,000 records with 5 fields, each styled – I suspect each file will takes many hours!2020-12-11 at 3:15 pm #15412PatStaffGlad we could help.
With the newest major version 1.6.8 merging styles is faster than before. Make sure to have an actual version (Backup your project files if you currently have a version older than 1.6.0).
For optimizing, please send us the project fully packed with MyDataMerge Menu > File > Package and include everything. You might replace data by dummy data you can find here (as long as no conditions related to data are used): https://mydatamerge.com/downloads/dummy-data/
Thats the most fastest way we can inspect your project and help optimizing it. We hereby guarantee to delete all data immediately once this support request is closed. You may send it to support@toolboxcode.com.

1.000 records shouldn’t take many hours but minutes for text styling only. Did it take hours or didn’t you test it yet?Official MyDataMerge Team
2020-12-11 at 3:21 pm #15414John MacLulichMemberI set it going maybe ten minutes ago, and the progress bar has not even got to 1%.
2020-12-11 at 3:27 pm #15415John MacLulichMemberI have created a package file and emailed it to support – hoping you can help optimize it.
2020-12-11 at 3:28 pm #15416PatStaffHi John – please abort it and try the following thins
Here are a few hints to merge faster (still you might send us the files for more precise help):
- Do not set Desktop as target path! macOS Catalina for example is known to slow things down when saving on desktop
- Move all static parts that are not part of the actual merge to master pages
- Resize your images (!) – this is very important as InDesign has to handle all image data again and again for every document created. If you output anything other than InDesign (e.g. PDF) this will have a huge impact on speed (imagine for every PDF each image has to be compressed and saved by InDesign)
- Do not apply a style in the merge if it can be applied in InDesign (cause it doesn’t change dynamically). Or apply a base style in InDesign and only let the merge change those few exceptions necessary.
- Check if it’s really a MyDataMerge thing or rather a thing of InDesigns processing: While exporting click on the icon in the top right corner to see the log. Check if most of the time you are “Waiting for XXX to be created” which indicates that InDesign is processing things.

Again – thanks for the prompt responses and helpful suggestions.
I will try a few of your suggestions shortly, after I abort the process.
Here is a link to a screen grab of the log file, showing that it is taking about a minute to process each record.

File: Screen Shot 2020-12-12 at 1.30.19 am.png
Size: 97 KB2020-12-11 at 3:46 pm #15418John MacLulichMemberI have removed all static elements completely – no images (the only images were EPS files, anyway).
And now have only two fields with text styles in the merge.
I am saving to a local SSD external disk, not the desktop – and it is still taking roughly 38 seconds per record.
2020-12-11 at 3:49 pm #15419John MacLulichMemberI then tried splitting the output into chunks of 5 records.
And now I get an error code 404032.
2020-12-11 at 3:50 pm #15420PatStaffHi John
i sent you an optimized file. We were able to go down from one minute to roughly 3 seconds per file. Please check the attached file in the email.

2020-12-11 at 3:55 pm #15421John MacLulichMemberThat sounds incredible optimisation. The email with the link has not arrived yet – I am keen to see what changes you made.
Mind you, 3s per record still means 50 minutes for 1000 records.
2020-12-11 at 4:11 pm #15422PatStaffDepending on your final goal there’s still room for massive speed improvements. E.g. if your final goal is “printing” and you don’t care if each record has its own file then there’s another technic using Multiple Records. I sent you another zip containing a project and InDesign file going down to 0,25 seconds per record. So round about 4-5 Minutes for 1000 records. (we just exported 1000 records in 4 Minutes, 38 seconds)

2020-12-11 at 4:22 pm #15423John MacLulichMemberSorry for the short period of silence – I have been testing the files you sent back.
I can see I will have to learn a lot about optimizing for speed.
