I think I fixed the extra digit. It seemed to be the different size field delimiters. Made them the same point size as the Field Name, and now the digit’s gone.
2020-12-11 at 7:13 pm #15440John MacLulichMemberI have hidden the background layer, so am now just processing the variable data only to PDF to the local Documents folder. Going faster – roughly 100 records per minute. Recombining the PDFs – I can hand that over to another Mac to process in Pitstop and to re-insert the background. Multi-processing. Brings the grand total time per file down to about 102-12mins.
2020-12-11 at 7:14 pm #15441John MacLulichMember10-12mins
2020-12-11 at 7:17 pm #15442John MacLulichMemberThe background layer is basically a PDF itself, with some white boxes and a logo. My recollection is that Indesign’s mail merge will process an optimized eps file faster than a mish-mash like this. Perhaps if the background were processed into a single lean eps it might go faster.
2020-12-11 at 8:05 pm #15443PatStaffHi John,
glad your down to 10-12 minutes and fixed the digit issue. I’ve run a few tests with your configuration.
If you just need PDF files without InDesign nor book file you should do this:
InDesign:
- Raise page amount to 80 (by copy it over) in your layout document – a well proved balance between speed/amount
- The most fastest one was to set the background to the master page – removing it like you did was even faster
- Do not run it from external harddrive (if installed so)
- If you didn’t restart the machine for a long time you should do so as this will clean important caches for InDesign
MyDataMerge:
- Filetype: PDF Preset: Your preset
Custom records per document: 80 x 1 - Uncheck “Keep Indesign files”
- Check “Overset report” (should always be checked)
Im off for today (here its GMT+1 so already 8pm in the evening) and keep my fingers crossed you get the jobs done in time. Did you know that you can run MyDataMerge on two machines with your license? So you might be able to split the work.

2020-12-11 at 8:10 pm #15444John MacLulichMemberThanks for all your help Pat.
I’m sure we’ll get there in the end.
FYI – I have managed to get the first 1167-record PDF file finished. The whole thing, after being optimised came down to 3.8Mb for a 1167pp PDF !!!
2020-12-11 at 8:12 pm #15445PatStaffYou’re very welcome.
Thats an incredible size reduction!
Just let me know (on monday) if theres anything else i can help you with.Official MyDataMerge Team
2020-12-11 at 8:15 pm #15446PatStaffA final addition – if you have NO images at all you can try to set 80 x 2 (or even more) – it will throw a warning – ignore it.
Without images this should be even faster.im out now.

2020-12-13 at 6:30 am #15453John MacLulichMemberHi Pat
I have attempted to load MDM on a second Mac. And I have got to the point of allowing the app to control Indesign , only to find that there are absolutely no apps listed at all in the RH pane of the Automation panel of the Security & Privacy preference tab – so the process fails and MDM quits.
So I cannot even get to the point of activating the second copy of MDM.
Help!
2020-12-13 at 6:31 am #15454John MacLulichMemberBTW – we are still lumbering our way through the 29 projects – and have completed abut a third of them so far. Some take less than 10 minutes – others take over half an hour to output the PDF files. There seems to be no consistency.
2020-12-13 at 7:14 am #15455PatStaffHi John
MyDataMerge asks for adding to the automation panel automatically. Did you restart the machine? Can you copy the info on menu > help > Diagnostics here so we can see what your versions are? You may flag the post as private.

2020-12-13 at 7:37 am #15456PatStaffAdditional info: Older macOS versions have a known bug on adding apps to these panes. This is not a MyDataMerge issue the but well try to help you solve it. That’s why we’re asking for the diagnostic content

2020-12-13 at 10:27 am #15458John MacLulichMemberHi – Sorry for the delay – dinner time here…
Restarted the Mac (several times during the last few hours), updated the OS to the latest version (was running 10.15.2), reinstalled InDesign and MS Excel…
iMac 15.1 with 16Gb RAM, running Mac OSX 10.15.7 Catalina.
I’m not sure what Menu>Help>Diagnostics you are referring to, as MDM will not start at all. I can send you the Mac OS log. Is that what you mean?
2020-12-13 at 10:54 am #15459PatStaffYes the menu is from inside MDM.
So it won’t work if you can’t start at all.
As workaround you can try to add MDM to full disk access area in system preferences in privacy.
There are a few ways to solve that for osx but instesd of doing this I’d recommend the above.

2020-12-13 at 11:04 am #15460John MacLulichMemberTried that – MDM appears in several of the Privacy and Security panes, but definitely not in “Automation”.
