I have my indesign template and I am wanting to data merge images and text. My data file is clean and I can run a normal merge via InDesign, however, My Data Merge is not recognizing my image columns in the spreadsheet.

    Hi Lonnie

    Please answer a few questions:

    1. Did you use autolink or did you set it up manually?
    2. Is your image placeholder in the list of placeholders?
    3. If yes is there an image icon or text icon next to it?

    Regards

I used Autolink. I’m not sure how to set it up manually.

    Thank you :)

MyDataMerge can’t know if you want to merge an image or text into a frame. By default it assumes: text.

So to tell it you want to merge images there are two ways (just use one of it)

    1. Inside your layout add an @ to the placeholder name. So instead of <<image>> write <<@image>>. Then Autolink assumes it is an image (you have to autolink again!)

    2. In the placeholder list in MyDataMerge double click the image placeholder to enter the editor. Select “Replace with image” instead of “Replace with text” in the drop down. Then click the plus sign to add a “Datasource” element and inside that element (double click it) select the datasource column with your image pathes.

Okay I have my images in the placeholder screen, but now it is not recognizing the image paths. I know they all work, because I ran a traditional data merge in InDesign.

datasource record 1 Placeholder ‘@IMAGE-1’ reported errors

Image ‘Macintosh HD:Users:lonniespivak:Library:CloudStorage:OneDrive-ImperialBagandPaper:Catalog:Green.png’ cannot be found!
It cannot be found at the path defined (‘Macintosh HD:Users:lonniespivak:Library:CloudStorage:OneDrive-ImperialBagandPaper:Catalog:Green.png’) in the datasource and also not at the default location (which is the same folder your datasource is located in)
(Default path: ‘/Users/lonniespivak/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-ImperialBagandPaper/2024 VB LOX Catalog/Data’)

You may select a custom location in the setup settings.

Ah you are using HFS pathes “some:path:to:image.jpg” and not posix pathes “some/path/to/image”.

In the current version there is a bug with path conversion from HFS to posix. Tomorrow we’ll release a bug fix for that.

This is a known bug – sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll let you know once it is available tomorrow. That will fix it.

Just to note: it’s never a good idea to have local pathes inside your datasource. If you pass the project to someone else the pathes won’t work.

It’s better to only have the image names in the datasource like “image.jpg”. Then you can set the path dynamically in MyDataMerge.
