Hello,
I’m trying out your extension before buying it and it works great so for. I just encountered an issue so far:
I’m generating a QR Code using Mydatamerge.
The company name is entered as static text. I’m entering a company name that contains a special Character: the french à . ( XYZ sàrl )
Whenever I scan the QR code ( tried various apps ) , the à is interpreted as: S. V+ r.l.
so instead of XYZ sàrl i get: XYZ s. V+ r.l.
What can i do to solve that?
Thanks for your help!

we made up a test file with a simple qr code placeholder. We added static text to the qr code output “XYZ sàrl” and tried all variations of QR-Code creation and it works as expected.
Please check:
- If you have the newest version 1.8.2 – if not please update
- If you have the newest version please try to enter the text manually into the static text field (not copy and paste!)

2022-10-18 at 7:03 am #17377Sebastien SteffesMemberThanks but I have the newest version 1.8.2 (11962 ) with also newest indesign.
The text is entered manually, no copy paste. (and by the way it happens with all special caracters, the french one like ç, à, è… but also the german ones like ö,ä,ü… )
Did you try to scan with an Iphone?
From what I read while searching it seems to be an issue between the Indesign generated VCard QR Code not defining the chartset and the ios scanner not knowing what to apply.2022-10-18 at 7:22 am #17378PatStaffHi Sebastien
the QR-Codes are generated by InDesign. So we need to check that first.
- Please give your QR-Code frames a background color (even if it is white). This enables another way of processing QR-Codes
- Then check “Optimize QR-Code for print” in the export settings (general tab) in MyDataMerge
- Export one file to an InDesign document
- Open that document you will find the QR-Code as a group of layers
- Select the QR-Code and double click it to access the second layer, then right click and “Edit QR-Code” (If that option isn’t available you’re in the wrong layer of the group). Then InDesigns QR-Code editor opens – check if the values are OK there and give me Feedback

2022-10-18 at 11:21 am #17389Sebastien SteffesMemberI followed your steps; the special caracters are correct if you create a qr code with text but when you choose vcard, all special caracters are messed up.
( as it seem that indesign is not setting the charset to utf8 ? )The error already shows in mydatamerge. image 1
but also after creating in indesign ( although you see the data entered is correct, what is read is different ). image 2
(i tried to attach image to this answer, but when i click on submit this page reloads without the answer added, so i added them in separate replies )

2022-10-18 at 11:44 am #17391Sebastien SteffesMemberThanks for your feedback. Did you see the pictures I posted? Did you try to scan the codes in those pictures? ( with iOS native camera app? )
Diagnostic:
MyDataMerge 1.8.2 (11962)
Adobe InDesign 2022 (17.4.0.51)
Microsoft Excel (16.66.1)
OSX (12.6.0)
iMac19,1tested with scanning with ios 15 and ios 16 standard camera app.
tested with iphone set to english and switched to french to see if that would affect something. ( no changes, caracters with error )Imho: the error seems to come from indesign qr code generator settings for vcard, not from mydatamerge in particular.
The Adobe post is the one i also found. ( you can find similar posts regarding french caracters )I’m sending you a package per mail. Thanks again for your great efforts.

now here comes the interesting part.
QR-Code works flawlessly with your files and VCard. 2.1 even in InDesign (german version, don’t wonder) it looks right after a merge:
Phew. This makes it even harder to debug. I’ll think about it and come back to you
Edit: We tested with same InDesign version than you have.

2022-10-18 at 12:28 pm #17393PatStaffEdit: I just rechecked the Screenshots.
It works in your InDesign too. Its just the QR-Code that gets interpreted wrong when scanning, right?
Do you have the possibility to recheck the scan with an Android device?

2022-10-18 at 12:39 pm #17394Sebastien SteffesMemberyes it’s just the scanning with native ios camera that bugs with VCARD 2.1
If in enter manually:
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:2.1
N;CHARSET=utf-8:éàèéàèüäö
FN:éàèéàèüäö
END:VCARDor
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:éàèéàèüäö
FN:éàèéàèüäö
END:VCARDno problem at scanning.
2022-10-18 at 12:44 pm #17395Sebastien SteffesMembersome non-native qr reader interpret them right, some not, but since nearly all ios user use native camera to scan qr codes, a workaround would be good.
